Course clinical guide → When Should a Sports Massage Therapist Refer? Red Flags & Scope
A specialization is useful when it develops skills the practitioner can demonstrate and apply within scope. Choosing a label alone does not establish clinical competence or employment prospects. Start with the task that currently exposes a gap in your practice.

1. Select a Specific Skill to Practise
Choose a task such as locating a landmark, maintaining supported contact or explaining why a movement comparison is relevant. Set an observable criterion and obtain instructor feedback, then repeat the task. Evidence for deliberate practice comes from medical education and is not a trial of a particular massage school.
Do not infer a guaranteed clinical outcome or career benefit from completing a course. The useful record is what can be demonstrated, with what supervision and what limitations.
2. Demonstrate Communication Alongside Technique
A practical assessment should include explaining contact, responding to feedback and recognising when the plan needs to change. Consent is part of competence, especially when a practitioner uses more than one method.
Build a Skill Record Without Patient Identifiers
Record the assessed task, feedback and next practice goal. Keep private patient information out of public portfolios. A fictional outcome or an unsupported testimonial cannot fill a competence gap.
3. Match the Next Course to the Gap
Clinical palpation may be the next step when landmarks and tissue distinction are uncertain; sport-specific movement and load reasoning may be relevant when the assessment does not connect to the athlete’s task. Check actual course descriptions and prerequisites.
The course pathway supports learning; it does not confer a medical title or legal scope by implication. Review demonstrated skills and referral decisions before broadening the service offered.
